Are School Homework Assignments Necessary, Should Homework Be Banned

Parental support for teachers and children regarding homework assignments

  • Ever wondered how to offer the best support  possible to your child? Trying to avoid late Sunday night conflicts? If these seem familiar problems to you then there are a few key steps that you can take to avoid conflict and provide effective support.

Firstly, recognise that one of the reasons the homework might have been left till the last minute is because they were unsure of how to do it and unsure of your support.

Try to find a moment when you can raise the topic of homework without it being questions like ‘Have you finished your homework?’ Try ‘Can I help you with your homework?’ instead. It may seem a small difference but the child will know you are there to support rather than judge how they are doing.

Secondly, admit to your own failings in knowledge and tackle them with your child. This will demonstrate to your child that it’s alright not to know something. It will also show your child that you are able to improve your own knowledge without getting upset or it reflecting badly on you.

Discuss possible places where you can  find solutions for example using the internet or books at home together will offer up opportunities to discuss things outside of the homework arena.

Finally, it is most important to remember that although the homework will pass with very little impact on either of your lives, the work you did together and the helpful support you offered and gave will remain forever.
